Did you know that the cleaning, hygiene and waste sector is now one of the UK’s top ten industries?

A recent report by the British Cleaning Council (BCC) revealed that the sector contributed £55.5billion to the UK economy and employs around almost 1.5 million workers – staffing levels close to the transport and storage sectors.  And the vital work carried out by cleaning staff throughout the pandemic has drastically adjusted public attitudes to the sector; with its staff no longer the ‘invisible workforce’.

With cleaning and hygiene centre stage since the start of the pandemic, the BCC report included some other very interesting research around the general public’s perception of safety in public spaces:

‘A Welcome Shift’

Lisa Laird, MD at GSA said, “This is a welcome shift in attitudes towards cleaning and hygiene staff; our frontline team has worked in partnership with our clients in every sector in which we operate, to create safe and hygienic spaces for their staff and customers.”

More to Cleaning, than Cleaning…

Lisa added, “I am encouraged by this shift in attitudes and am hopeful that it will allow us to attract new recruits to the industry, and at all levels of our operation. Many people looking for work don’t always consider our sector – or perhaps appreciate that our business has a traditional organisational structure with opportunities arising in finance, procurement, operations and customer services teams.

We have invested heavily in staff training and development programmes and remain committed to developing our existing team.  We are also optimistic that the new-found awareness and recognition for our sector will allow us to attract new talent to our industry from other sectors.

The establishment of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the UK Cleaning an Hygiene sector at the end of last year is also a very positive step for our industry too; helping to raise its profile and the challenges we face as we attempt to navigate 2022.”
